mogami (kancolle)
最上 (Named after the Mogami River, lit. "Best")
The lead ship of the Mogami-class heavy cruisers in Kantai Collection.
Mogami is a frank, upbeat, energetic, and tomboyish girl. Due to having collided three times in her historic service, she's also commonly portrayed as quite clumsy, and too eager to watch where's she's going. Although all three collisions were with three different ships, collisions with Mikuma are most commonly portrayed, as she is a sister-ship, and artists tend to keep sisters in their own cliques. Because of her short hair, boyish tone and the fact she wears shorts, she is often portrayed as the target of rumors of being a boy, or outright portrayed as one.
Appearance-wise, Mogami has short, blue-green hair with swept bangs, similarly-colored blue-green eyes (although some artists draw her with black hair and brown eyes, making her look more Japanese), and small breasts. She wears a serafuku composed of a dark red long sleeved top with a darker red sailor_collar and brown shorts, black kneehighs, and black lace-up boots.
Her combat gear consists of a triple- or double-gun turret in either hand, and another pair of turrets strapped to her thighs. Historically Mogami's 15.5 cm triple-gun turrets were replaced with 20 cm double-gun turrets during her 1939-40 refit, and this is reflected in her in-game remodel. During her upgrade, she also loses a turret to gain a flight deck with three aircraft on it. In a backpack-like setup, she has a bridge and smokestack with a radar array sticking up off her mast.
Mogami Kai Ni
Mogami was the third of her class to be given her second remodel on March 30, 2021. Her outfit is still basically the same as before except for her color scheme, which has been changed to complement her blazer-wearing sisters: Her shirt is now colored darker brown with a lighter brown sailor collar, the neckerchief is now colored orange, and she now wears brown kneehighs and lighter grey boots.
The real-life Mogami
Historically, she was part of the first wave of ships in the notoriously ill-fated sortie up Surigao Strait. After the first wave was annihilated (except for Mogami and Shigure) the admiral leading the second wave ordered a panicked retreat, causing the flagship Nachi to abruptly swing into the fleeing Mogami's path, causing a collision that crippled Mogami. Mogami was left behind to be destroyed by American aircraft.
