A submachine gun that is light enough to hold and fire one-handed. Machine pistols often have detachable or folding stocks, or no stock at all. Modern machine pistols frequently fire in three-round bursts instead of full auto, in order to make the recoil more controllable. In many cases they are adapted from semi-automatic pistol designs, though in a few cases (such as the Micro-Uzi and Uzi Pistol) the opposite has happened.
